Ashkenazim A term applied to Jews whose families came from Europe.
Assimilation Absorption into the culture or mores of another population or group.
Ellis Island The federal immigration center in New York Bay, from 1890-1954. This is where most Eastern European Jews first entered the United States. The site currently contains the original building and a museu.
Emigrate Leave one's country of birth to move to another country.
Halacha Jewish law.
Heder A religious elementary school which was usually only one room
Immigrate Move to another country from one's country of birth.
Landsmanshaften Organizations, in the "new" country, consisting of people who came from the same towns in Europe, formed for social and philanthropic purposes.
Maimonides Rambam, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, (1135-1204). Medieval authority on law and philosophy. Born in Muslim Spain, he moved to Egypt where he was a physician to the sultan. He wrote the "Guide to the Perplexed," and the "Mishneh Torah," to provide the average Jew with definitive answers to questions of philosophy and law.

Nuremberg Laws Laws that were enacted under the Third Reich to keep Jews separate from German gentiles. The laws made it illegal for non-Jews to work for Jews and forbade Jews from studying with non-Jews. Marriages and any relationships between non-Jewish Germans and Jews were also illegal.
Paternal Related on your father's side
Pogroms Organized riots accompanied by murder and destruction of Jewish communities in Eastern Europe. Approximately fifty-three major pogroms were directed against Eastern European Jews from 1871-1906 and the governments did not intervene.
